The Indian Medical Association announced a nationwide strike on August 17 following the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College. From 6 am Saturday to 6 am Sunday, essential services will be maintained but elective surgeries and OPDs will be halted. Protests have erupted across the country, and the police investigation has been transferred to the CBI.
